I don't get this.

First up, let me explain that, if you favourite one of my deviations, I will look, at the very least, at your Favourites to see if we share similar interests.  If we do, then I'll check out your gallery and see what you're doing in that field.  If I like it, I will follow you.

So once in a while, I'll get notification of a fav and go look at the relevant deviant's Favourites.

It immediately becomes clear that this deviant is watching new deviations go up, real time, and favouriting 99% of everything; because my deviation, posted no more than 30 minutes previously, is already way deep on page 6.  Some of the stuff favourited before and since is good.  Most of it is bilge.  None of it shares any vague relevance, interest or theme.  These deviants don't seem to be bots of any sort.  Many of them are Core users (i.e. paying customers of dA) and most of them do have some degree of management of their Favourites and Galleries.  So what they heck is going on?  Are people using "Favourite" as a synonym for "Like" in some sort of gesture to give encouragement to everyone making a good effort?

That's exactly what it is. To most people. Favorites is the like button. I admit I use it in the same way to some degree. Though the stuff I favorite does have some kind of semblance with other things in my faves. I like seeing your stuff because they're figure sculpts and those can be cool. I've seen a lot of crossover from WH4K and Bionicle, or Lego in General. so even though I have next to no interest in table top gaming, I enjoy seeing the figures because it can inspire an idea or a style I'd like to try.

While I'm not faving things every .3 seconds, I will sometimes fave something just to show support and use it as DA shorthand for "hey great job with this piece you did. Keep at it." Because just saying "hey cool thing." to me isn't enough. I get comments like that and they're not really any help. I appreciate them but if I don't have much to add or a quip to make I generally just favorite and move on.

I get so many faves per work I mass delete them and don't really pay attention. I focus on Dev watches though. I make sure to tell everyone who watches me thanks and say hello. Good conversations have come up that way and I've gotten to know some really great people that way. So my advice is focus on the people and engaging with other artist, and not so much the favs or why people fave stuff because the truth is they're about as meaningful as a like button on Facebook.
